About
Carrer del Consell de Cent in Barcelona has undergone a careful transformation that reflects the city’s commitment to greener, calmer, and more people-centered streets. Historically a typical Eixample thoroughfare, it was dominated by vehicular traffic, parked cars, and through-movement, limiting pedestrian comfort and social interaction. The redesign reimagines the street as a shared public space that prioritizes pedestrians, cyclists, and urban life while maintaining essential access for service and local traffic.
The project, coordinated by the Barcelona City Council within the framework of the Superilla (superblock) programme, emphasizes traffic reduction and multimodal mobility. Vehicle lanes have been narrowed, and crossings simplified, creating space for wider pavements, cycle lanes, trees, and seating areas. Textured paving signals pedestrian priority, while still allowing service access. Contemporary street lighting improves safety and accessibility, with energy-efficient LED fixtures scaled to human activity.
Green and ecological interventions play a central role. Trees, linear planters, and rain gardens have been introduced along the street, providing shade, improving air quality, and moderating the microclimate. Permeable surfaces support stormwater management, contribute to climate adaptation, and introduce seasonal color and biodiversity along the corridor.
Ground-floor uses have been activated to support local life. Cafés, shops, and small offices create a lively and diverse urban environment, while informal seating, bike racks, and pedestrian-friendly zones encourage social interaction. Small play areas and interactive features give families and children reasons to linger, turning the street into a vibrant civic space rather than a mere transit corridor.
The transformation demonstrates Barcelona’s approach to permanent, design-led urban renewal. By combining careful interventions in mobility, ecology, and social infrastructure, Carrer del Consell de Cent now functions as a resilient, inclusive, and human-centered street, supporting local commerce, social life, and environmental performance. The project exemplifies how even a modest urban thoroughfare can become a symbol of urban renewal, civic pride, and sustainable city design.
