About

The requalification of Travessa da Quinta Amarela and part of Rua de Nove de Julho forms part of the Rua Direita programme promoted by the Municipality of Porto and implemented by GO Porto. Completed in 2024, the intervention addresses a residential street network within the Cedofeita area, where ageing infrastructure, accessibility constraints and deteriorated public space conditions had progressively reduced the quality of the urban environment.

The project combines infrastructure renewal with public realm improvements, reflecting Porto’s contemporary approach to neighbourhood-scale urban regeneration. The intervention included the reconstruction of carriageways and pavements, the upgrading of drainage, water supply, telecommunications and public lighting networks, and the installation of new urban equipment aimed at improving everyday functionality and comfort.

A central objective of the project was to enhance pedestrian accessibility and reinforce the role of the street as a shared public space.

Pavements were redesigned to provide continuous and accessible routes, while traffic-calming measures and a reorganisation of the street layout contribute to safer conditions for residents and visitors. Small landscaped areas and new tree planting were introduced to soften the predominantly mineral character of the street and improve environmental quality.

Beyond its physical improvements, the intervention seeks to strengthen neighbourhood liveability through a more inclusive and pedestrian-oriented public realm. The requalification improves conditions for everyday movement, social interaction and local activity, while creating a more coherent and attractive urban environment.

As part of the wider Rua Direita programme, Travessa da Quinta Amarela demonstrates how targeted municipal interventions can contribute to the regeneration of ordinary residential streets. Rather than relying on large-scale urban restructuring, the project illustrates how incremental improvements to infrastructure, mobility and public space can enhance accessibility, environmental quality and neighbourhood well-being.
