As part of European Mobility Week, the municipality of Maia dedicated a day to the European JUST STREETS project, in which it takes part as a ‘Twin City’. In a pilot scheme, Rua Eng.º Duarte Pacheco was opened up to the community and closed to cars, a gesture both symbolic and practical towards a more fluid, lively and human town centre.

The day began with a public session featuring talks by Fernando Gomes on the project, Filipe Ramalhão on the pilot scheme and Daniel Casas-Valle on the importance of inclusive public-space design, followed by an open debate.

In the afternoon, Daniel Casas-Valle, of ´the Future Design of Streets association´, led a public-space design workshop for council officers and industry professionals. Working in groups, participants explored contemporary examples, analysed the street, sketched proposals for its future and presented their findings. The workshop also included a visit to the street itself.

Council officers then analysed the data gathered, sorted the contributions into themes and proposed collaborative interventions in the town’s public spaces, drawing on the principles of participatory urban planning and the humanisation of public space. The initiative also helped promote education on sustainable mobility, identify patterns in how children travel around the town, and explore ways of making those routes safer, more creative and more efficient.
